why prostitution is bad: first reason
There are several reasons why I have a clear position that governments should not legalize prostitution.  I will try to write about them over time.  Thailand, by the way, does not officially have legal prostitution, just hardly enforced.  In any case, here's reason number one:

Judy and I stopped by a few of our known bars last night.  At one of them, the cashier has become a Christian and attends church semi-regularly.  As we were sitting catching up with her and a couple of the others, I noticed a new face in the corner a couple of stools away, looking unhappy.  I smiled and introduced myself.  Nui said she was from Surin, and had only been working there a few days.  Sai walked up to the counter to say hello, distracting my attention for a minute.  Meanwhile Tuk motioned Nui over to Judy for prayer, saying she said Nui had a lot of problems.  Tuk considers Judy to be "lucky", because so far everyone she has prayed for has gotten well.

Between loud music and Nui's soft voice, not to mention our 2nd grade Thai, it was hard to follow a lot of her story, but much louder than her words and tears were the deep scars on her arms and neck.  Whether or not those were self-inflicted we're not yet sure, but Nui has been seriously abused.  And abused women are prone to end up as prostitutes .

I once saw a documentary on a Nevada brothel.  It was cut together with no commentary, simply interview sound bites with prostitutes, madams and customers.  It seemed like the perfect open-minded secular approach--prostitution is what it is, so why knock it.  But the documentary ended with comments from a number of women about their past, and how they ended up in that life.  One said very simply, "You just don't do this if you haven't been sexually abused."

Is it bad?

Consensual sex between adults, where one receives money for the activity is not inherently bad. Forced prostitution is always bad. The anti-prostitution lobby does not seem able to differentiate. For experiences of prostitutes and a considered response to the issue, see also theamsterdamdiaries.net

I'm A Prostitute

There are a number of reasons a person will become a prostitute. Some of us have very different reasons. I would like to share a short story. Always had an abusive child-hood, Anti-social, Low Self Esteem, Abandonment, Never good enough. At the age 16 got pregnant. 18 got pregnant again. Mom kicked me out. 19 on the steets with two children. If your wondering I home school under my belt. No college. In between, during, and before the children I've had jobs. So my point here is teens that are growing up today have no support system, no leaders, no inspiration. The government set our (BLACKS) up to fail. This is a generational curse. The only way out of our misery is either rap/sing, model, stay in school(less likely) or prostitution. Every were you turn you see money. The doctors need money the lawyers, the teachers, the grocery store, insurance, rent, lawn ext. We want the same things whites have. have you drove through a white nieghborhood lately and kept driving. Do you see the difference. If you haven't bought a house in 60 years if your black, you probley wonte. I'm not saying all prostitutes are black. Some are white and they have totally different reasons. My point is there is a serious problem in America and we need to face it. Until then. Prostitutes will be prostitues.

well i'd like to say that prostitution goes hand in hand with abuse. it's not only the women who abuse their bodies by doing sexual favors to hundreds of men but as this woman said "you just don't do this if you havent been sexually abused."
its such a degrading act. Men have no respect for the women who prostitue themselves, they are put on a lower level by society for the plain fact that it is immoral to many because sex is supposed to be a sacred act apon two lovers, not given to just anyone who has pocket change and a back seat.
Its psycologicaly wrong as well, no one in their right mind would truely want ot be a prostitute, giving their bodies up to dirty strange men everyday. no one likes abuse like that unless they've been sexually abused in their past where as they should get counseling instead of believing prostitution is a exceptable, happy way of living.

prostitution is not a career. it's not something you can andvance in or be promoted to the next level especially as these women get older. its a road to failure. Even the dirty old men dont want a loose old bag. what then? what do they do when work runs out and she's used and abused. drugs, alcohol, suicide all to cover the pain and suffering that they led their life to be.

it is not the only road possible to take when there's no money and children to take care of. there are plenty of organizations that support woman in such suituatios that provide daycare and food and even shelter if none's available. these organizations help woman get on the right track. no woman has to result in self desicration.

so much i can say so little time

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment, Steve, and I'm sorry that you misunderstood the purpose of my post. Indeed, I have sat across the bar table from many a precious woman such as you describe, heard her story and thought that indeed, she had no other choice. In fact when you look at the sacrifice that many such women make for their children, hating their work every day but doing it anyway, I would even call some of them noble.

At risk of sounding self-righteous, let me make my main concern clearer: the fact that a poor woman is willing to sell her body doesn't give me the right to buy it, legal or no. Rather, it gives me the responsibility to help her find another way to meet her financial needs. I spend more money on bar girls than the average sex tourist. But I don't touch any of them. Instead we help them work, study, take care of their families and improve their lives.

I realize the post does not get into suggesting what a good, compassionate public policy might look like. I'm sure someday I'll research and write about it in some detail. I do find Sweden's law interesting, where only buying sex, not selling, is prohibited, but would like to read on it further. At the very least, I'm sure we would agree that if prostitution is indeed to be illegal, a government must provide an adequate financial safety net for poor women, which means valuing them enough to pay for it, rather than relegating them as objects for the pleasure of those who would take advantage of their misfortune.

OK, first, if your going to knock prostitution, learn the definition. Prostitution according to dictionary.com is "the act or practice of engaging in sexual intercourse for money."
The definition is not "the act of getting abused, and not having the moral support or the finances to get help, and therefore get abused by a pimp." If you are SO against prostitution, then realize that there are two forms of prostitution. One, is an act of a desperate individual who needs money, and therefore sells herself. The second, is a women who sells herself to clients but is what we call a "high-class" prostitute. These women ARE educated, employed, and establish connections through there clients. THIS is the prostitution in which you and all the other anti-prostitution people should be going after, since you complain about the disgrace of women. Discriminizing people who sell themselves for money to put food on the table is more harm then good. As a man, I can easily admit that if women had equal sex drives as men, I would do the same thing in a time of need.
